but the truth is, the right ceiling details can make just as much of a difference as paint, wall treatments, and flooring, if not more. Accentuating your ceilings can take your design to the next level, drastically change the mood in any space, and draw the eye up — from massive wood beams to the grandeur of a coffer detail. Today we’re sharing our favorite examples to remind you that something as little as a ceiling detail can make all the difference.
Wood-stained ceilings are a great way to bring warmth, depth, and character to a home and set the tone for the rest of the space. We love the coziness a wood ceiling can add to any room, from spacious great rooms to intimate entryways.

If you love the idea of adding a wood element to your ceilings but don’t want to go with a complete stain, wood beams are a beautiful option that can add character, texture, and tone to high vaulted ceilings in great rooms and bedrooms alike. While every project calls for different elements, we typically stain our wood ceilings and beams to match the wood floors for a cohesive look and feel.
Wood beams are beautiful on their own but can also be painted white to blend in more with your walls or paired with other ceiling details like tongue and groove.

Tongue & groove is another element we love on the ceiling and use in our projects often to add an extra layer of detail. It feels subtle and fresh and can play well with other elements like beams and coffer details. If you’re thinking of using tongue & groove in your home, try switching up the layout in a few different places to bring both cohesivity and interest.

Coffer ceilings offer a timeless, elevated feeling to any space. We love using coffer details in areas like the dining room where you want the space to feel more intimate and special for gatherings.

W allpaper doesn’t have to just be for the walls! Our team loves experimenting with a wallpapered ceiling when the design calls for it. We’ve done a few wallpapered ceiling details in kid’s spaces and love how it makes the room feel instantly cozy and filled with character.

While often we keep the ceilings white, painting your ceilings a bold tone to match or contrast the walls can add a lot of interest and is a simple way to make a room feel tonal and sophisticated, enveloping you in as soon as you enter.

The ceiling detail in all of your examples / projects are amazing! Which of the ceiling details if any would you recommend using for a ranch home with only 8′ ceilings? Would added detail tend to make the ceilings look lower or higher?
I would love to know the answer to Sandy’s question as well! Thank you!
Me encanta!! Me refresca mis ideas día a día Gracias
Hi Shea, What paint finish on the ceiling did you use for the Windsong project? I was thinking of using a semi gloss, but now I’m thinking a satin finish in BM’s Dove White might be best(?)
Hi there- I’m also curious about paint colors and sheen used in the coffee photos as well as paint ideas for the tray.. Thanks so much!
That’s coffer dang autocorrect!
Hi Shea: Pics are gorgeous! I know you used Swiss Coffee on your walls in your new home. Did you use the same color on the ceilings?
